Knowledge 1 History of pineapple


When Pineapple was discovered in the New Continent in 1492, it was already spread to Central America and the West Indies. After the discovery of the New Continent, it was widely introduced to the world. It was distributed to various parts of Africa, India, and the Nanyang Islands in the 16th century. By the 17th century, it was grown in the greenhouse owned by the European nobilities and it became widely cultivated in the tropical and subtropical regions within the north-south latitude of 30 degrees in the 18th century.

From the 14th century to the 16th century, the Kingdom of the Ryukyus was in an era of great trading. Trade with Western land (China), Luzon (Philippines) in Southeast Asia, Siam (Thailand), and Malacca (Malaysia) was actively carried out. A famous item which was spread through trade around that time was Awamori (rice wine). Some time later, pineapple came. The pineapple seedlings from the stranded Dutch ship in Kawahira Bay spreaded around off the Ishigakijima Island in 1866, and this was the said to be the first time it was brought into Okinawa.

In 1888 on the Okinawa main island, the imported pineapples from Ogasawara was spread around Kunigami-gun. By 1927, the current main cultivar "Smooth Cayenne" was introduced in Izumi, Motobucho.

It is said that pineapples contains a good amount of vitamin B1, and the synergistic effects with vitamin B2, C, citric acid etc., promotes the breakdown of carbohydrates and promotes metabolism. Furthermore, it is effective for fatigue recovery, summer heat, anti-aging as well as helping digestion after eating meat by the effect of proteinase called bromelain.
